My Top 10 Favourite Musicals (in no particular order)

As much as classical music is my life, I also love musical theatre. Mainly because it combines both my love of both stories and of music.

Today I come to you with my top ten musical recommendations, in no order whatsoever because I am an indecisive human being. (But please, I beg of you, never ever listen to the Lord of the Rings musical. It is an abomination to Tolkien's masterpiece and will probably make you lose both several brain cells and faith in humanity.)

1. The Great Gatsby (the original Broadway cast recording with Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada)

2. The Phantom of the Opera (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)

3. Les Miserables (the original Broadway cast recording; and I'm actually going to see this live!!)

4. My Fair Lady (the movie with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison)

5. Mary Poppins (starring Julie Andrews)

(it is at this point that I start referencing my musicals playlist on apple music, because in addition to being indecisive, I am also forgetful.)

6. Little Women

7. Newsies (with, again, Jeremy Jordan)

8. The Secret Garden

9. West Side Story

10. Beauty and the Beast

Enjoy your musical-listening, and happy October :)

Hannah

  1. (Okay, but now I am so curious about the LOTR musical...maybe just listening to one song wouldn't kill TOO many brain cells? :P)

In any case, Les Mis and Mary Poppins are two of my top favorites as well, and I also enjoy Phantom, My Fair Lady, and The Secret Garden. Hm, I didn't know there was a Great Gatsby musical...what an interesting concept! I can't really picture what the story would look like in musical form...

Have you watched Fiddler on the Roof, by the way? It feels like the sort of musical you might like. (I love it, myself!) I also recently saw and really enjoyed You Were Never Lovelier (which is an older musical, from the '40s), which is a good one for when you want something a bit lighter and fluffier. :P

    1. Well, if you must…

Oooh my goodness yes!! (Strangely enough, it works, and the music is REALLY good. I do suggest it!)

I haven’t seen Fiddler, but I have definitely listened to some and would like to see it! And I shall also look into that one too - it seems similar to the time period of The Secret Garden.

    2. Well, if it both works well AND has great music, perhaps I shall have to check it out!

I'd definitely recommend them both! You Were Never Lovelier was filmed during WWII, but it doesn't reference the war at all - in fact, I feel like it was meant to be escapist entertainment, giving people a chance to enjoy some beautiful romantic dancing and music and sets without a hint of all that was going on in the world at the time. I think it makes it kind of a cool piece of history. :D

    3. You absolutely should :D

Oh that is so cool! I really must listen, then!
